Our Story
Black on State is a global movement rooted in Black creativity, community, and visibility. What began in downtown Madison is growing into a vision to transform influential streets and shared spaces into platforms where Black and minority voices, art, and entrepreneurship can thrive.
Grounded in the belief that creativity is a pillar of society, Black on State creates intentional experiences that place Black creatives at the center of culture and community decision making. Through festivals, gatherings, and experiences like the Art of Love Conference, the movement fosters connection, expression, and collective growth.
Founded by Ashley Moseberry, Black on State is guided by the belief that the wellbeing of the creative community must match its drive for success. The work turns city centers into spaces for inspiration, healing, and meaningful economic impact.
The Black on State Festival is the annual flagship event that brings this vision to life. Held each year in Madison, Wisconsin, it transforms two city blocks into a vibrant celebration of Black culture, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Through live performances, local vendors, food, family activities, and wellness experiences, the festival creates a space for community gathering, connection, and collective joy.
Ashley Moseberry
Founder and CEO
Ashley is the visionary behind Black on State, a dynamic festival and movement rooted in creativity, culture, and community. As a multi-hyphenate creative and community organizer, she is committed to reimagining Black joy, artistry, and entrepreneurship in the heart of our cities. Guided by a deep belief that Black voices and creativity belong at the center of influence where major decisions are made, Ashley created Black on State to shift culture, challenge norms, and reclaim space.
Her work is grounded in the belief that art is not a luxury, but a foundation of society that heals, inspires, and drives change. From activating city streets with live music and vendor markets to hosting healing hikes, park gatherings, and nature-based experiences, Ashley’s mission is to amplify overlooked stories and create spaces where Black and minority communities can show up fully as creatives, thinkers, makers, and leaders.
In recognition of her impact, Ashley received the Impact Award from the Urban League of Greater Madison Young Professionals. Under her leadership, Black on State has grown into a year-round platform for creative change, offering ongoing opportunities for wellness, expression, and collective power.
